A TRADITIONAL EVENING AT MUCKROSS FARM

At Muckross Traditional Farms you are invited to take a stroll down memory lane to visit Ireland in the 1930s and 1940s. This was a period before the widespread use of electricity, when all work was carried out using traditional methods.
Set on a hillside overlooking the Lakes of Killarney, the farm is made up of a number of traditional farmhouses each staffed by workers who interact with your guests as they make their way to Quill's Cottage.
In one farmhouse the woman of the house is preparing brown bread and scones. Every housewife in Ireland would have baked bread on a daily basis. People were very self-sufficient.

The art of baking on the open fire is demonstrated and visitors can taste the unique flavour of the freshly baked bread.
Another traditional home craft was the butter making. Cream was topped off the milk and kept until the end of the week when there was sufficient time to turn this into butter. Lots of elbow grease was required to 'spin' the 'churn', which helped curd the cream. The new butter is then 'washed' to remove any excess milk and salt is added to help with preservation.
Guests will have the opportunity of visiting three separate working farms, each complete with animals, poultry and horse-drawn farm machinery. At each one there will be craftspeople demonstrating a variety of tasks. Visitors will be invited to visit a labourer's cottage, a carpenter's workshop, a harness maker and a blacksmith's forge.

Traditional musicians will also be playing at various points throughout the farm.
A marquee will be erected close to Quill's Farm where you will enjoy a traditional Irish meal and the menu can be completely tailored to suit the needs of your group. The meal will be served as a rolling buffet style and guests can eat as they arrive.
Today at Muckross Farm all the old traditional Irish cutlery and furniture are still intact and used throughout the evening to ensure that guests receive the real authentic Irish experience. Traditional Irish musicians will entertain during dinner but the night won't end there. After dinner a set dancing session will take place to the tunes of the live musicians at which the participation of guests will be expected!!!
